The sun may be quietly setting on what was called the Biggest Bridal Show Scam of its kind. The scammers are still at large and will more than likely never be discovered, according to sources near the story.
“It’s a big deal in our business but in the grand scheme of things, it’s a blip on the chart,” said once bridal print executive following the story. No other information or updates have been available since the weekend. Even the venue’s web site seems disinterested in their posted information that reads Last week, the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority became aware that an entity identifying themselves as The Boston 411 has been promoting an event entitled “Boston 411 Home & Bridal Event” and alleging that said show is to be held at the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center. Please be advised that The Boston 411 has not contracted with the Authority and that no such show is scheduled to be held on these dates at the Hynes Center.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Boston Police Department are currently investigating the case. If you have paid to be an exhibitor or purchased a ticket, please contact the Boston Police Department via the following email address:victims.bpd@cityofboston.gov
Over the weekend, bridal show promoters continued their efforts to make sure the future of such events are not impaired. Ken Rabasco posted, “I give Bill Heaton a lot of credit for stepping up to the plate. A scam like this can hurt our entire industry. When I speak with new clients, I try to educate them on what makes a good bridal show. Scams like this are always bad, however in the last two years there have been many new start up companies with very bad shows as well. “
Bosco offered some tips on how to avoid being taken, saying, “The easiest thing to do, is to do a Google search for shows in that market. Look to see if that show comes up several times in different searches. Example: NY Bridal Shows, New York Bridal Shows, Bridal Shows in NY, etc. Then check to see if that show has print ads in the regional bridal magazines like Brides New York, Wedding Sites & Services, etc. Check out the magazine rack at at a Barnes & Noble. Ask them to send you samples of their newspaper or direct mail advertising. A red flag should go up if they send you promotional material that was printed on a color printer. “
